It is not unknown that the American schools curriculum has become increasingly demanding. With this increase has come several questions of whether the last two years of high school are needed. First, unless advanced courses are taken, the tasks are being more redundant than actually introducing new learning materials.

Pressure to Learn

Pre-school children are already reading and writing, as well as doing basic mathematics. This has placed those students ahead of students of earlier years. Increased pressure on schools, teachers, and students has also given rise to the main question of whether these last two years should be required: dropout rates.

Growing Dropout Rates

High school dropout rates have not seen a great deal of fluctuation, but they have been on a slight incline since 1969. There is much debate about the calculations for the dropout rate. For instance, using 1969 as starting point for the incline is really a tough decision because the Vietnam War.
